Answers to March 18 Questions

If a Hebrew finds something, does he have the right to keep it? no

List any law in chapter 22 that you have not yet read. Cross-dressing of men and women forbidden; do not take the mother bird and the eggs from a bird’s nest (the principle is similar to Leviticus 22:28); put a safety rail on the edge of your roof; do not mix grapevines with other crops (similar to Leviticus 19:19); do not yoke an ox and donkey together to work; laws concerning a husband that accuses a wife of fornication before marriage; laws concerning rape; law concerning two uncommitted singles who commit fornication

Divorce is not allowed for two different cases in chapter 22. What are they? If a man falsely accuses his wife of not being a virgin when they got married, he may not divorce ever her; if an unengaged couple commit fornication, the man must pay the bride price for her and marry her if her father allows it; if they marry, they can never divorce

What kind of fornication is punishable by death, and what kind of fornication is not punished with death? Punishable by death: if a girl is accurately accused of fornication before marriage, she is to be stoned for playing the harlot while living in her father’s house; any man with a married woman or a woman betrothed to be married; rape in the city for both parties; rape in the country only for the man; incest. Punishable not by death but by a fate worse than death (a shotgun wedding) for two uncommitted singles.

Who cannot enter the assembly of the Lord? One who is made a eunuch by accident or design; a Moabite or an Ammonite

Who may enter the assembly of the Lord? an Edomite or Egyptian after three generations

What principles do you see in the rules regarding military camp? It was to be kept clean and sanitary; first, it must be kept clean morally, then physically clean as a reflection of the spiritual truth that God is in their presence

What were the Hebrews to do with runaway slaves? Not turn them in, not oppress them, but take care of them. Note this contrast with possessions lost by a neighbor; those things were to be given to the owner if known or kept until the owner is discovered

What is so bad about the wages of a dog? A “dog” is a male prostitute; notice the context.

What is the principle in 23:17-18? Money gained by immoral means is not allowed in the treasury of the temple

In what manner was a person permitted to take food from his neighbor? He could eat it in his hand while on his property

In what manner was a person not permitted to take food from his neighbor? He could not gather it to eat somewhere else later on

Are God’s rules for divorce valid today? We are under the law of Christ; He went to the beginning and restored God’s original plan

Why are newlyweds not to go to war? To focus on pleasing their wives

Why were the millstones not allowed to be taken as collateral? Because they are needed for production

How did the Hebrews help the poor and fatherless and widows? Don’t go over the harvest the second time to pick up whatever might be left over

When was a poor laborer to receive his pay? At the end of each day

What are the principles in 24:10-13? Show respect for the other man’s property; show compassion because of his need for his cloak at night
