Who talked with Eve? The serpent
The serpent is Satan (Revelation 12:9)
What did Eve say that God told them was permitted? Eve said that fruit from all trees but one in the garden was permitted, but she did not say that it was God who said that
What did Eve say that God told them was not permitted? Not to eat nor to touch the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil
Observe that Eve made the prohibition stricter than God actually did, and she didn’t give God the credit for saying what He permitted
Did the serpent say anything that was true? Yes, that their eyes would be opened if they ate the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil
The devil’s lie that they would not die is mixed with the truth that their eyes would be opened. Deceit is much more effective if false doctrine has a lot of truth mixed in with it to make it sound scriptural.
Why did Eve eat the forbidden fruit?
1.the tree was good for food
2. it was pleasant to the eyes
3. it was able to make them wise
Genesis 2:9 says that all the fruit God made was pleasant to look at and good for food. The special appeal of the forbidden fruit is the appeal to man’s pride to have their eyes opened.
Why did Adam eat the forbidden fruit (see verse 17)? Because he listened to his wife
How did Adam and Eve feel after they sinned? Ashamed, fearful
Satan implicitly promises happiness and pleasure in his temptations, but the true fruit is shame, guilt, fear, and unhappiness, not to mention all the negative consequences and spiritual death.
What is the consequence for what the serpent did? He was cursed to crawl on his belly; eat dust; God put enmity between him and the woman and between her Seed and his seed; the seed of woman would crush the head of the serpent.
This is a prophecy of the great spiritual conflict. Jesus saw it coming and alluded to the seed of the serpent in John 8:44. The Jews should have caught on to the connection with Genesis 3:15. Jesus also spoke of it in John 12:31-33. The same three elements of Genesis 3:15 are in John 12:31-33: there will be conflict, Jesus would suffer, Satan would lose. Revelation 12:7-10 shows the fulfillment of this when Jesus died and triumphed over Satan’s spiritual forces of darkness.
What is the consequence for what the woman did? God multiplied her sorrow and conception; pain in childbearing
The rest of Genesis 3:16 is actually an assurance that, in spite of the pain in childbearing, the woman would still desire her husband. The husband’s leadership role is reinforced; it is not a consequence of her sin (1 Cor. 11:8-9, 1 Timothy 2:11-13
What is the consequence for what the man did? God cursed the ground to make it more difficult for the man to receive food from the ground; he would die physically
Who is the seed of woman? Jesus Christ
What kind of clothing did God make for Adam and Eve? Coats of animal skins
What kind of clothing had they made for themselves? Aprons of fig leaves
We should learn an obvious lesson about modest apparel here. Aprons are insufficient in covering what a bathing suit would cover. The material was also insufficient. God used a sufficiently thick material, and it was a “coat,” a knee-length garment.
There is a lot of spiritual symbolism here, too. Man’s attempt to cover himself after his sin is in vain. His sin is exposed by the voice (word) of God walking in the garden (Hebrews 4:12-13). God provides a covering that required the death of the innocent (how else do you get animal skins) in order to sufficiently cover the man. We cannot cover our own sins by excuse-making, self-justification, or other escapes from responsibility. God covers our sins with the blood of Christ when we obey the gospel in faith (Rom. 3:26), repentance (Acts 2:38), confession (Matthew 10:32-33), and baptism (Colossians 2:12-13).
Why did God expel Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden? So they could not eat of the tree of life and live forever
Before they sinned, they could have eaten of the tree of life. After they sinned, God’s justice would not allow them to eat to live forever.
What was Cain’s offering? Some fruit from the ground
What was Abel’s offering? The best of the firstborn of his flock
Why did God not look on Cain with favor? Because his offering was not acceptable
The worshiper and worship stand or fall together. Cain was rejected because his offering was rejected; Abel's offering was accepted, therefore he was accepted. God explained this to Cain. We cannot offer unacceptable worship and expect God to accept us. It's the other way around.
Why did Cain kill Abel? He was envious and angry
What was the consequence for Cain? He could not grow food anymore and would become a vagabond
Who replaced Abel? Seth
List some things the descendants of Cain invented. Nomad lifestyle, musical instruments, metallurgy, polygamy
In the genealogy in chapter 5, who is the only person God took? Enoch
Many people say, “God took him” when a loved one dies. It is ironic that the only person that God took was the person who did NOT die!
Why did God take him? He walked with God (by faith – Hebrews 11:5)
