April 23: II Samuel 11-13 Sin and Its Consequences

What time of year did kings go off to war? The spring

Where was David? He stayed at his house

Whom did he see? Bathsheba

What was she doing? She was bathing on the rooftop of her house

Why did David send for her? To commit adultery

Why did David call Uriah to Jerusalem? To lie with his wife so it would appear that her pregnancy was caused by Uriah and not David

Did David’s plan succeed? no

What did David try the next time? He got Uriah drunk so he would go to his wife

What was David’s final solution? To arrange for Uriah to be killed in the battle with the Ammonites

What was David’s reaction when he heard that Uriah died in the battle? “Oh, well. That’s the way it is in war.”

When did Bathsheba become David’s wife? After the time for mourning had ended

Who did God send to rebuke David? Nathan the prophet

What approach did Nathan use? He told the story of a rich man and a poor shepherd who had one lamb raised in his family as a child. He told David how the rich man took the poor man’s lamb to serve his guests instead of his own abundance. David’s reaction was that the rich man deserved to die. Once David was committed to the principle, he made the application to David himself.

After Nathan convicted David of his sin, what did he tell David? First, how God had richly blessed David, then how David sinned against God and caused God’s enemies to blaspheme God’s name

What consequences would David bear because of his sin? The sword would not depart from his house and the child conceived would die

What did Nathan say after David confessed his sin? he was forgiven, but he still had to suffer the consequences

When David and Bathsheba’s son became ill, what did David do? He prayed and fasted

When he died, what did David do? He got up to eat

How did David show his faith in life after death? He said the child will not return to him, but he would go to him

Who was born to David and Bathsheba soon after this? Solomon

What other name was given to him? Jedidiah

What does it mean? “Beloved of Jehovah”

Why did Joab call David to Rabbah? To receive the glory of capturing it

Who loved his sister in David’s family? Amnon loved Tamar

Who gave him advice on how to get her alone? His cousin Jonadab

What did he do when they were alone? He raped her

How did he feel toward her after this? he hated her more than he loved her before

Where did she live after this? At Absalom’s house

What did David do about this? nothing

What occasion did Absalom use to kill Amnon? The celebration of the shearing of the sheep

What did the other sons of David do? They fled

What false report came to David? That all of David’s sons had been killed by Absalom

Where did Absalom go after killing Amnon? He fled to Geshur

How long did he stay there? Three years
