Answers to March 31 Questions

Who went to their homes east of the Jordan River after the fighting for Canaan ended? The men from Rueben, Gad and Manasseh that lived east of the Jordan

What did they acquire during the fighting? A great amount of livestock, gold, silver, bronze, iron, and clothing

What did they build east of the Jordan? A very large altar

What did the other Israelites think about this? They thought they were starting an unauthorized place of worship

What event did Israel use as an example that one man’s sin can affect the entire country? Achan

Why did the tribes east of the Jordan build the altar? As a reminder to the other tribes that they are to stay united in faith and culture

What was Phinehas’ reaction when he heard their explanation? He was convinced of the Lord’s presence in keeping them from hurting each other because of a misunderstanding

What was the altar called? A Witness Between Us That The Lord Is God

What did Joshua tell Israel that they had seen? What God had done to all the Canaanite nations for their sake

What did Joshua say they would do after he died? Take possession of the land

What did Joshua tell Israel not to do? Not to disobey God’s word; not to associate with the nations around them or serve their gods

What would happen after Israel would become unfaithful? God would use those nations against them

Where did Israel make a covenant with God? Shechem

What did Joshua tell Israel that God did? Took Abraham from Chaldea, gave him many descendants; He sent Moses and Aaron to bring them out of slavery in Egypt, through the wilderness, overcoming the Amorites east of the Jordan, blessing Israel instead of cursing them as Balaam was hired to do; conquered Jericho, used hornets to defeat their enemies,and gave them the land with houses and fields already there

What choice of gods was Israel told to make that day? Choose between the gods of Abraham’s ancestors in Chaldea, or the gods of Egypt, or the Canaanite gods, or serve the Lord God

What choice did Joshua publicly make? “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

What did Joshua do as proof that the people promised to follow only the Lord? He took a large stone and set it up near the great oak near the holy place of God as a witness to their commitment

How long did Israel remain faithful to God? Not only till Joshua’s death, but for the entire time that generation that saw the things God did in Egypt
